About the procedure

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin covering the head of the penis. Families and individuals choose it for a range of reasons — medical, personal, cultural or religious. Whatever the reason, Dr Sam provides the procedure with care, discretion and respect for your wishes.

Performing the procedure in the clinic means it happens in a calm, familiar environment rather than a hospital, with Dr Sam looking after the whole process from consultation through to healing.

Reasons families choose circumcision

Medical
Recurrent infections, a tight foreskin or other clinical reasons your doctor may advise.
Hygiene
Some families prefer circumcision for ease of long-term hygiene.
Cultural & religious
A meaningful tradition for many families, carried out with sensitivity.
Personal preference
An individual choice, made after an informed discussion.

Common questions

Do I need a doctor or GP referral for baby circumcision?
No. A GP referral is not required. You can contact our clinic directly to book a consultation or circumcision appointment.
What is the best age for baby circumcision?
The ideal time for newborn circumcision is between 2 and 6 weeks of age, as healing is generally quicker. Dr Sam currently performs circumcisions for babies up to 3 months of age.
Which circumcision method is best – Plastibell or Mogen clamp?
Both the Plastibell (ring method) and Mogen clamp are safe and effective techniques with excellent cosmetic outcomes. In Australia, the Plastibell method is the most commonly chosen and has a slightly lower reported risk of bleeding. Dr Sam offers both techniques and will help you choose the most suitable option for your baby.
Does laser circumcision have any advantages?
No. Laser circumcision has not been shown to provide better results and may be associated with increased scarring and a longer recovery. For this reason, Dr Sam does not routinely recommend laser circumcision.
Which circumcision method heals the fastest?
Healing time is similar for both the Plastibell and Mogen clamp techniques. Most babies heal within 2 weeks, regardless of the method used.
Which circumcision method is easiest to care for?
Both techniques require similar home care and have straightforward recovery instructions. You will receive detailed aftercare advice before going home.
Does baby circumcision hurt?
Your baby's comfort is our priority. With your consent, oral pain relief and a local anaesthetic are used to minimise discomfort. Some babies may still cry during the procedure, often because they are being restrained or are in an unfamiliar environment rather than because they are in pain.
Can my baby have tummy time or lie on my chest after circumcision?
Yes. Your baby can be cuddled, breastfed, have tummy time, and be positioned as normal after the procedure.
What should I bring on the day of the circumcision?
Please bring an extra nappy and a spare change of clothes for your baby in case they become soiled after the procedure. If your baby uses a dummy (pacifier), we also recommend bringing it along, as it can help provide comfort during and after the procedure.
What aftercare is included after circumcision?
Every family receives a comprehensive circumcision care kit and detailed written aftercare instructions. You will also have direct access to Dr Sam for any questions during recovery, and a 1-week follow-up appointment is included in the procedure fee.
Can I book an urgent or same-week circumcision appointment?
Yes. We understand that parents may need appointments at short notice. Where possible, we reserve same-week and selected same-day appointments to accommodate urgent requests.
