A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure that provides permanent contraception by stopping sperm from reaching the semen. It works by carefully blocking the vas deferens — the small tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. After the procedure, semen looks and feels exactly the same; it simply no longer contains sperm.
The body keeps producing sperm afterwards, but reabsorbs it naturally. A vasectomy has no effect on hormones, sex drive or sexual function — it is one of the most reliable, lowest-risk forms of long-term contraception available.
Rather than a traditional incision, the no-scalpel method uses a single tiny puncture to reach the vas deferens. Because the procedure is done under local anaesthetic, you stay awake and comfortable throughout — most patients feel only mild pressure or a gentle tugging sensation, with no significant pain.
A vasectomy is not effective immediately. About three months after the procedure, a simple sperm count test confirms that no sperm remain in the semen. Until that test gives the all-clear, you'll need to keep using another form of contraception.
