What is a vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure that provides permanent contraception by stopping sperm from reaching the semen. It works by carefully blocking the vas deferens — the small tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. After the procedure, semen looks and feels exactly the same; it simply no longer contains sperm.

The body keeps producing sperm afterwards, but reabsorbs it naturally. A vasectomy has no effect on hormones, sex drive or sexual function — it is one of the most reliable, lowest-risk forms of long-term contraception available.

The no-scalpel difference

Rather than a traditional incision, the no-scalpel method uses a single tiny puncture to reach the vas deferens. Because the procedure is done under local anaesthetic, you stay awake and comfortable throughout — most patients feel only mild pressure or a gentle tugging sensation, with no significant pain.

No stitches needed in most cases — the small opening heals on its own
Less bruising and a quicker recovery than the traditional approach
Performed in the comfort of the clinic — no hospital stay, no general anaesthetic

What to expect

1
Consultation
Dr Sam discusses your medical history, explains the procedure in full and answers your questions. You're welcome — and encouraged — to bring your partner so you both feel confident in the decision.
2
Preparation
Preparation is minimal. You'll be asked to shave the area the day before and to bring snug-fitting underwear to wear afterwards for support.
3
The procedure
Carried out right here in the Narellan clinic under local anaesthetic. Through a single small puncture, Dr Sam gently blocks the vas deferens. The whole procedure usually takes around twenty minutes.
4
Recovery & aftercare
Most men rest for a couple of days and are back to light activity within the week. You'll be given clear aftercare guidance, and Dr Sam is available if you have any concerns as you heal.

The 3-month sperm test

A vasectomy is not effective immediately. About three months after the procedure, a simple sperm count test confirms that no sperm remain in the semen. Until that test gives the all-clear, you'll need to keep using another form of contraception.

Common questions

Is a vasectomy permanent or reversible?
A vasectomy should be considered a permanent form of contraception. Although reversal surgery is sometimes possible, it is more complex, costly, and does not guarantee fertility. A vasectomy is best suited to men who are confident their family is complete.
Does a vasectomy affect sex drive, erections or sexual performance?
No. A vasectomy does not affect testosterone levels, sex drive, erections, ejaculation, or orgasm. The only difference is that your semen will no longer contain sperm.
Do I need a GP referral for a vasectomy?
No. You do not need a referral. Simply book a consultation to discuss whether a vasectomy is right for you.
How long is the recovery after a vasectomy?
Most men return to light activities within 2–3 days. Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and sports for about one week. Sexual activity can usually resume after one week, provided you are comfortable.
How should I prepare for a vasectomy?
The only preparation required is to shave the area at the front of the scrotum before your procedure. We will provide full instructions during your consultation.
When can I stop using contraception after a vasectomy?
Do not stop using contraception immediately after your vasectomy. Continue using contraception until your post-vasectomy semen analysis confirms there is no sperm present. This test is usually performed around 3 months after the procedure.
Can I book an urgent or same-week vasectomy?
Yes. We understand that many patients have busy schedules. Where possible, we reserve same-week and selected same-day appointments to accommodate urgent requests.
How do I arrange my post-vasectomy semen analysis, and do I need to come back to the clinic?
No. On the day of your vasectomy, you will receive a comprehensive post-vasectomy care kit containing your aftercare instructions, a semen collection kit, and clear directions on how and where to submit your post-vasectomy semen analysis. Our clinic will also send you a reminder when your test is due, usually 3 months after your procedure. Once your results are available, we will contact you directly, so there is no need to return to the clinic unless further review is required.
